PROBLEM: Create a carrier for art supplies for use in the field.

1. Concept Selection Matrix (Sketches of the 10 concepts can be found in my Week 3 posts.)
2. Concepts for Prototyping
          J. File Box style (first choice) and D. Vest. The results of the matrix were a little surprising to me. The Messenger Bag was the original solution to my "gap." However, although the score for this is high, I am opting to focus on the "file box" style, because this concept seems to me to be at least a little bit original (there are lots of messenger bags on the market): I'm interested in seeing if the working surface ("desk") is useful. The Vest is kind of interesting, although I'm not sure how to make something more useful or stunning than a standard fisherman's vest.

Below is a model of my "file box" style of carrier, meant to be worn with the cross- body strap. Pockets for supplies: pencils, pens brushes, paints. A compartment for a seat pad.  A surface ("desk") for working supported by two cords. Pockets for 9" X 12" notebook and watercolor block. The user can stand or sit while working, and have supplies easily accessible.
The model above is 10" X 13", with the two cords on the short sides.  The photo below shows a model with the cords on the long sides.

While working on the "file bag" prototypes I thought of a new feature, a panel which slides out and increases the work surface. The sketch shows a cross section of the front flap illustrating the position of the sliding panel.

The sliding panel can increase the working surface by a little more than a half.

My second choice for prototyping one of my concepts is the Vest carrier. Below is a first try at a model. I became more interested in creating a good line for this garment, something more stylish, even though through use it would be stained with paint, etc. I would need to try it out in fabric (instead of kraft paper) and work on the styling.
